Today, we are extremely pleased to announce that we have filed a petition to form a union with the New Mexico Public Employees Labor Relations board. This is the first formal step toward forming a union for full time faculty at SFCC. Over the last 2 weeks, we have collected signed authorization cards from an overwhelming majority of you, who have said loudly and clearly that you want a union for faculty. Filing our cards with the labor board today carries more than legal significance, it is an overwhelming show of support for collective bargaining, and a demonstration of our commitment to ensuring the highest quality learning environment for our students.
The Labor Board will now begin to review our petition, and we will continue our own work towards the creation of SFCC-AAUP. Once the labor board has completed their review, they will schedule an election toward the beginning of spring semester so that faculty can formally vote to certify the union. Stay tuned for important updates on opportunities for faculty participation in these important next steps.
Finally, as we head toward the end of the semester, we want to express our sincere appreciation to you all for the many honest conversations we’ve held in the past weeks, for your extraordinary dedication to SFCC’s students, and for your commitment to the improvement of our collective working environment.
